1950s Sophie Gimbel Blue Silk Faille Dress

silk faille and velvet Fashion used to be all about the French. America had no hometown flavor to speak of and the Parisians dictated the rules. Period. But that was the 30s and 40s and not everyone was happy with the arrangement - cough, cough Claire McCardell. What started as Saks Fifth Avenue's in-house boutique that sold the most exclusive French designer collections ended up as being one of the most original American forces of its time. Eventually dropping the French couture and designing her own pieces, Sophie of Saks is synonymous with elegant American style. An ocean blue silk faille dress with all sorts of wonderful details; a pleated bodice, decorative velvet and faille belt, squared upper back and full, swingy skirt. The style that is so flattering on so many body types, the way to keep this modern is all in the shoes. We recommend a pair of Rene Caovilla silk slingbacks with little jewels (they come in so many colors) but there are oodles of flirty Miu Miu shoes that would make a playful partner to a most spectacular vintage dress. Unlined, the bust measures 37", waist 27" and length 44.5". Excellent condition. sold
