1970s Holly Harp Floral Chiffon Dress

spotlight The word 'romantic' has come to be synonymous with smarmy garbage like bubble baths with a guy who has back hair but buys you diamonds and candles that smell like strawberries. To do the whole concept justice, you have to go back to William Blake -who was quite romantic but also violently sexual in ways - which is all good with us. No time for those Kama Sutra kits where you have some poor, bored boyfriend dusting you off with a feather powder puff while he waits for his turn at the sexual favors (and we can promise you his idea of a hot time is a whole lot more straightforward than being rubbed with oil that turns hot when you blow on it). Is there a fashion equivalent to the kind of lusty romance we idealize? Holly Harp perhaps? Her dresses always had the vibe of Daisy Buchanan and 30's garden parties. Deep plum synthetic chiffon is abloom with deep red roses and clematis, the flowers highlighted with shocking pink, butter yellow and cornflower blue. Tiered like the petals of a flower, the sleeves come down to below the elbow and the skirt narrows as you approach the hem. Backed in opaque plum crepe, this would be a fabulous dress to wear to a wedding with a Philip Treacy hat. Romantic without being cloying so it's more like a bottle of Veuve Clicquot and fraise des bois while you're sitting naked in a pool at the bottom of a quarry than an insipid bubble bath in an apartment complex tub with bad jazz playing in the background. Bust measures 36, hips 36" and length 50". Excellent condition. $385.00
