1970s Geoffrey Beene Satin Waisted Wool Dress

spotlight While Geoffrey Beene didn't cut a swath through traditional fashion with intensely creative new design, what he did was PERFECT American design. Beene paved the way for every modern designer with his impeccable lines and the ability to imbibe his work with the spirit of well-being and calm luxury. This is not the over-the-top luxury that you think of when you hear the name Galliano - it's about something you can't see or feel. With logos and ostentatiousness behind some of us, Beene represents the new wave of classic clothing that is designed to flatter and to last. Knowing how to buy vintage is largely about which piece to collect of each designer's and knowing which decade to pick it from (second only to knowing what looks good on you and what you love). Beene is the exception - his stuff is always good. A fine black wool jersey dress with a scalloped taupe satin wave cutting through the midriff. Channel quilted where the satin meets the wool, almost trompe l'oeil in that it seems like a separate piece of clothing worn over the dress. The neckline is softly gathered and trimmed in taupe silk satin, as are the hem and sleeves. The sash belt is jersey on one side, satin on the reverse, so when you wrap and tie it you get glimpses of both. Ageless, trendless and above the need for alterations to make it perfect. Bust measures 38", hips 38" and length 42". Excellent unworn condition with original hangtags. sold
