The British designer that is probably best remembered, without knowing his name, for the dress he put Julie Christie in during that Nixon victory party scene in "Shampoo". Jackie stood at the bar in a dress that literally had no back and showed the tiniest bit of the cleft of her cheeks. She was nearly virginal looking in that ridiculously sexy dress and the image was stunning. Well, Julie Christie was stunning anyway but that dress - wow. Bates was best known, by name, for dressing Emma Peel though and her style could never be whittled down to just one outfit, although the leather pieces were not bad. A perfectly articulated black matte jersey gown, trimmed in black and white striped silk satin. A belt tucks into slits at either side of the waist and sits against the naked small of your back, exposed only in the front at the waist. The back is left to hang and fall in waves like a theatre curtain and the sleeves are slim to the wrist with a pair of black and white striped buttons, echoing the ones at the neckline. We are showing it here belted over the dress, front and back. A romantic dress that isn't very girly and has a distinct British look - John Bates is one of our many favorite designers who remains an obscure, hard-to-find label and his work is still absolutely relevant now. Cut generously to be able to belt to each individual wearer, the shoulders are 15", outer sleeve 23.5" and length 51.5". Ideally sized for a modern 6 to an 8 that borders on 10, it is in excellent condition. $695.00 |
